After the success of the first Philippine Pyromusical competition held in SM Mall of Asia, this year, me and Sha had the privilege to go to the 2nd Philippine Pyromusical Competition last Saturday where Portugal and United Kingom showcased their fireworks synchronized with music.

United Kingdom

During it’s first year, we had the chance of taking photos from the VIP area (around San Miguel by the Bay) which has the best view. This year, we were in the Media area, the same as the VIP/Patron area where dinner is also served. This is the reason why you’ll see some trees and posts in the above photos. Thanks to Melo for the invite.

I like the fireworks display of United Kingdom better than that of Portugal. Also, United Kingdom used the song “Firework” by Katy Perry while Portugal used some Bon Jovi songs. :p

This year’s competition kicked off last February 12. Listed below is the schedule and the participating countries:

Feb. 12
South Korea, 7pm
Spain, 8pm

Feb. 19
Portugal, 7pm
United Kingdom, 8pm

Feb. 26
China, 7pm
France, 8pm

Mar. 5
Japan, 7pm
Canada, 8pm

Mar. 12
Australia, 7pm
Philippines, 8pm

Ticket prices are as follows:
VIP (w/ dinner) P1,500
VIP P500
GOLD P200
SILVER P100

You may get your tickets via:

TIP: Make sure that you arrive early and make sure that you get the VIP ticket and watch from the seaside (just in from of the Music Hall, in SM Mall of Asia). You should also bring your tripod with you if you intend to take photos of fireworks.

Marina Bay Sands

After a hearty dinner at Lau Pa Sat with my former officemates, we walked around Marina Bay. I never thought we’d walk from One Raffles Place to Fullerton Hotel. Some of you might think it’s silly to walk around that far but we really do not have a choice. The roads were closed since it’s F1 season there. It may be tiring but it was a fun experience.

Since my first visit to Singapore, a lot has changed. Marina Bay Sands is just one of them. It’s a luxury hotel and a casino. We weren’t able to go on top of Marina Bay Sands though since it’s already getting late and we have companions that will be going to work the following day. In order to go to the top, one must pay 20 SGD.

Buildings around Singapore

When we reached the corner of the Marina Bay, we stopped for a bit to take photos of the buildings around the city.

The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands

Our next pit stop is The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands. It’s a mall with a lot of designer brands inside. If you have the money to splurge on shopping, you may go ahead and shop there.

Helix Bridge

Afterwards, we’re able to walk on the Helix Bridge. The Helix Bridge is a brilliantly designed one. When we were there (October 2010), only half of the bridge was open because of the on-going construction in Marina Bay Sands area.

Then, we passed by the Youth Olympic Park and then we literally walked on the F1 race tracks in order to get to Esplanade. The Esplanade is also known as The Durian because of the design of its roof. We stopped Makansutra Gluttons Bay so we could have some refreshments.

Then, we walked all the way to Fullerton Hotel since that’s the nearest place that we could get a cab. The good thing is we arrived there before 12mn since the taxi rates are higher after 12mn.

Me and Sha were able to experience an overnight stay of One Tagaytay Place courtesy of the hotel. We weren’t really expecting a big room since we were told that we will get to stay in a Deluxe Twin room. We were overwhelmed when we’re told that our room has been upgraded to a one-bedroom suite.

The one-bedroom suite’s space inside the bedroom is ideal for two people but it can accommodate one more bed. With the additional bed, the people occupying inside the room can still move around. There are two televisions in the suite. There’s one LCD TV inside the bedroom and another LCD TV (a bigger one) in the receiving area of our room.

What I like about our room in One Tagaytay Place is that the furniture that were used are well thought of. The dresser that doubles as a desk is one of those furniture that I’m amazed of. Our room has a mini refrigerator, and an electronic kettle as well.

The bathroom is not spacious. What I like about it though is the option to use hot/cold water from the shower. Of course, this amenity is a must especially in Tagaytay. A glass divider (between the shower area and the toilet area) would have been a great addition though.

Entrance of One Tagaytay Place

One Tagaytay Place is just one of the hotels in Tagaytay where you can stay all-day long. The hotel has a spa, a restaurant, a bar, a gym, a pasalubong shop, a swimming pool, a game room and free internet access!

Filipino-Chinese Friendship Arch

Binondo, Manila’s third district, is also known as Manila’s Chinatown. We just had a photo walk here where our route began a couple or more meters away from the foot of Jones Bridge (just outside Original Savory). We were then welcomed by the picturesque Filipino-Chinese Friendship Arch.

We then headed to New Po-Heng Lumpia House where we had fresh lumpia (spring roll). Then, we walked some more and upon reaching the corner of Ongpin and San Nicolas streets, we saw there a shrine of Santo Cristo de Longos. Garlands of sampaguita can be found around the cross. At the foot of the cross, you will see there a jar with incense sticks lit up by the devotees.

Santo Cristo de Longos

With this imagery, you will surely notice the fusion of both Catholicism and Buddhism. After a few snaps, we walked some more and then we passed by another arch. As we reached the corner of Salazar and Ongpin streets, we saw this interesting street sign. We were not just interested to take a photo of this one because the pole had dragons. We noticed that the N in Ongpin is flipped horizontally. I’m not sure if it was just a mistake.

Street signs with dragons

Then, we had dumplings at Wai Ying Fastfood since Dong Bei was closed (not operating on a Black Saturday). Then, we walked towards Tomas Pinpin St. to try out the Singapore Hainanese Chicken Rice restaurant. On our way there, we passed by some interesting subjects to take photos of.

Calesa in the streets of Binondo

It would have been a nice idea to ride on a calesa (horse-drawn carriage) around Binondo. But since we’re quite a big group, we just chose to walk.

An old building in Binondo

The old buildings in Binondo are interesting subjects as well. Just by looking at the old buildings, you will easily notice the influence of Spanish and Chinese architecture.

Inside Binondo Church

A visit to the Binondo Church is also a must. Anyway, this was not included in our recently concluded photo walk.

Strolling around Binondo is like a time travel. Engaging in such activity will let you discover the beauty and charm of old Manila.

If you’re going to the Bicol region, most especially Legazpi City, Albay, you should not miss the majestic Mayon Volcano. The volcano is famous for its perfect cone. Actually, you can see Mayon wherever you are in Albay. Last month, we were in Legazpi City and the moment we went down the airplane, the Mayon Volcano can already be seen. We arrived at 7:30 in the morning and at that time, it was too cloudy so only half of the volcano was in sight.

The very next day, we were able to see the beautiful Mayon Volcano with its perfect cone when we went to Lignon Hill. The alert level last November was at level 2 and only white smokes were being seen on its crater. Now, unfortunately, Mayon Volcano is on the verge of erupting. Living around the area will be hard (again) for them. As of this moment, it is not advisable to go near the volcano (if you’re planning for trekking adventures, etc).

Since we weren’t able to buy tickets, we watched from Bonifacio High Street (the road between Mag:net BHS and The Spa. It’s recommended to purchase tickets since you won’t be able to see the fireworks that were displayed at a lower height because of the buildings and also because of the large tarpaulin blocking it.

The General Viewing Area can still be a good spot for you to watch and take pictures of the fireworks. If you would like to have a tented seating, you can either choose between the Special Viewing Area and the VIP area.

Watch out for the other fireworks displays in the following dates:

November 28 – Canada and Australia
December 5 – Japan and Italy
December 12 – South Korea and USA

There are several resorts situated along Caliraya Lake and one of which is the Caliraya Recreation Center. It is located in Lumban, Laguna with a lot area of 7.6 hectares. You can go there via South Luzon Express Way and via Antipolo.

What I like about the Caliraya Recreation Center is the scenery which lets you experience a cozy atmosphere.

The resort is one of the popular choices of destinations where to have team building and as well as youth camps.

Our group availed of the Duplex type of accommodation and it is inclusive of:

1. Entrance fee.
2. Full board buffet style meals (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner).
3. Free flowing coffee & hot tea during meal time.
4. Overnight accommodation (aircon room with cable TV).
5. Free use of swimming pool, slip n slide, earthball, monster basketball and obstacle course.
6. Free use of slide pinoy & hanging bridge.
7. Ferry boat ride to and from the resort (24 hours service)
8. Jeepney transfer inside the resort

The duplex has 5 double deck beds located on its first floor. On its second floor, there are mattresses. Each duplex unit has a capacity of around 14 people. Each unit has two restrooms (one in the first floor and one in the second floor). Each restroom has 3 cubicles (2 for shower, 1 for toilet).

I think that the Duplex/Dormitory units is a good choice because you’ll get to enjoy a better view of Caliraya Lake.

Some of the activities that you can do in Caliraya Recreation Center are:

Canoeing
